Royal Northern Sinfonia is passionate about the sound world of the classical chamber orchestra - the committed playing; the importance of each individual contribution; the clarity, finesse and focus of sound it can produce. That’s why we are always keen to add new works to our repertoire for the core chamber orchestra line-up. As RNS celebrates their 60th Anniversary Season, we are commissioning young composers to write a celebratory piece marking the occasion. Criteria & Eligibility Submit an original celebratory piece of music scored for RNS’ core orchestration of up to 6 minutes in length: Open to all students studying full or part- time at a UK university or conservatoire during the 18/19 academic year. Previously performed or commissioned works and previous award winners are not eligible. -Scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings (8.6.4.4.2). -Auxiliary instruments can be used (piccolo, alto flute, bass flute, cor anglais, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet and contrabassoon), but no additional instruments are permitted. Submissions Submit an anonymous score as a PDF; an audio (MP3 or WAV) file of the piece; a composer CV/biography; and short programme notes. Submit via email to: classical@sagegateshead.com If your composition is selected for Round 2, PDFs of orchestra parts will need to be produced at short notice. Assessment Up to six shortlisted works will be workshopped by Royal Northern Sinfonia on Tue 6 Nov 2018. The shortlist will be gender balanced. The works of three finalists will be performed live in concert by RNS, conducted by Jessica Cottis, during Sage Gateshead’s New Year, New Artists weekend on Fri 18 Jan 2019. A final vote on the night from the jury, orchestra and audience will establish the prize winners.
