Composers who are 21 years of age or under are invited to submit a new piece for Pentecost, suitable for upper voices. The piece can be for unison, SA or SSA choir, or for choir and congregation. The accompaniment may be piano and/or organ, or may be unaccompanied. Composers, if they wish, may include parts for a C instrument.

The piece may be a hymn, psalm or motet. Hymn settings may be responsorial or strophic or another form suitable for the liturgy.

There will be a single prize of €350 awarded for the best entry, and the winning piece will be performed by the Schola at the Confirmation services which take place in St Mary's Church, Navan during May 2019.

Competition guidelines
• Only one submission per composer.
• Composers must be 21 years or younger on 15 September 2018.
• Submissions must be unpublished and written specially for the competition. Arrangements of traditional hymns will not be considered.
• The piece can be for unison, SA or SSA choir, or for choir and congregation. It may include piano and/or organ accompaniment, or be unaccompanied.
• The duration of the piece must not exceed 5 minutes.
• Submissions will be evaluated on textual, musical and liturgical merits.

• The text of the piece must be religious, in keeping with the Feast of Pentecost, or suitable for the Sacrament of Confirmation, and can be in English, Irish or Latin (or any combination).
• The composer must obtain permission for any copyrighted text.
• Music must be submitted by email only, in Finale, Sibelius or pdf format. Please include your name, address and a brief note on the piece in your email.
• Submissions must be received by 15 September 2018. Winners will be notified by 31 October 2018.
