Roger Smalley : Poles Apart: Chamber Music



This selection of Roger Smalley's recent chamber and solo piano works features, as well as his Piano Trio, Clarinet Trio and Piano Quartet: Crepuscle, the Chopin mazurka and a Brahms intermezzo which provided their inspiration.

"This collection of chamber pieces shows that Smalley has certainly made his peace with the great tradition that he and so many of his contemporaries rejected in their youth... But the result is never tired neo-romanticism, but far more bracing, for Smalley has refracted that harmonic and gestural world through his own principles of organisation, creating a genuine and highly personal tension between that background and his invention."
