Gian Carlo Menotti dies

Gian Carlo Menotti, the composer of popular operas and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes has died aged 95.

Menotti's Christmas work "Amahl and the Night Visitors," was commissioned by NBC and for many years was broadcast every Christmas Eve.

In later years he was in demand as an opera director, so much so that he told The Times in 1987 "I wish I'd never started staging operas. It has taken so much time away from my composing,"

He also started a festival in his home town of Spoleto.
