Profile
Tom Harrold is a Scottish composer now beginning his second year at the Royal Northern College of Music, studying under David Horne. He was awarded an entrance scholarship to the college, and is supported by Dewar Arts Awards and The Cross Trust. Prior to the RNCM, Tom studied piano and composition at the Music School of Douglas Academy for six years.
Now aged 19, Tom has had his music performed by groups including the BBC Scottish Symphony, the BBC Symphony, the Scottish Chamber and the Aurora Orchestras, the National Philharmonic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Endymion Ensemble, along with the BBC Singers, Ebor Singers, and numerous professional soloists. His music has been broadcast several times on BBC Radio 3, and as a pianist he has broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland. Works by Tom have been performed throughout the UK, Europe, and the Caribbean. Notable performances include a premiere at the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago to the leaders of North, Central and South America, and BBC Proms performances and commissions in 2007 and 2008. Tom’s music has also represented Barbados at the Commonwealth Pianorama in 2009.
Tom was winner of the BBC Proms / Guardian Young Composers’ Competition 2007, winner in the Published Adults Category of the National iCompose Composition Competition 2010 (run by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, The National Galleries of Scotland and Linn Records), short listed as a finalist in the NCEM / BBC Radio 3 / Tallis Scholars Composers’ Award in both 2009 and 2010, and was joint winner of the Heriot-Watt University Young Composers’ Competition 2009.
Upcoming projects include a fifteen-minute commission for WeltBlech (World Brass) for their forthcoming German tour (culminating in performances in The Berlin Philharmonic Hall early next year), a new solo work for the principle trombone of Grimethorpe Colliery Band, and a CD recording by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
