Gamelan Yowana Sari, directed by Professor Michael Lipsey of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, performs on gongs, metallophones, drums, and other traditional instruments crafted by I Pande Sukarta in Bali. The ensemble is made up of college and graduate students, as well as community members, composers and local musicians, taking on the task of learning and premiering this brand new musical fusion of styles, sounds, and ideas.

Gamelan meets 21st-century music. The traditional Indonesian orchestra is reimagined and transformed by today's composers.

“Liaisons II:Bartók & Kodály” is the second installment of PhiloSonia’s 2017-18 season Liaisons.

The concert looks into two of Hungary’s greatest composers brought together by their passion for their native folk music. Their trips throughout their homeland documenting folk melodies on phonograph cylinders singlehandedly created ethnomusicology and formed each composer’s unique musical language.
