Wigmore Hall played host to the first UK performance of the composer’s String Quartet No. 1 in April 1943 and provided the platform for the November 1945 world première of String Quartet No. 2, complete with its mighty ‘Chacony’, a tribute to Henry Purcell.

Olli Mustonen piano
Martyn Brabbins conductor

Bartók’s fiery suite of dances was one of the composer’s first works to achieve international success and was commissioned to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the merging of Buda and Pest into one capital. In the second half of the programme, Olli Mustonen gives the UK Premiere of a concerto written in 1923 for Paul Wittgenstein (who lost his arm during the First World War). The afternoon closes with the ‘Symphony’ that Hindemith extracted from his opera Mathis der Maler, which was also given its first performance in Berlin, but in 1934 just a few months before the Nazis banned his music.

Quartet for the End of Time
Bramall Music Building
University of Birmingham, Edgbaston
United Kingdom

Tickets: £4 adults / free for under 16s (all children must be accompanied by an adult)

On a bitingly cold January night in 1941, at the Stalag VIIIA German prisoner-of-war camp, an extraordinary piece of music was performed for the first time by a group of four prisoners - a clarinettist, violinist, cellist and pianist. The composer was Olivier Messiaen, the piece Quartet for the End of Time. Drawing inspiration from birdsong and ancient Hindu rhythms, and with movements with titles such as ‘Dance of fury, for the seven trumpets’ and ‘Tangle of rainbows, for the Angel who announces the end of time’, the piece is a 20th century classic.

Come and join us for this hour-long informal concert, hear excerpts of the piece, and learn the amazing story behind the music and about the lives of the musicians who performed it.

Tickets: $20 day of performance, $15 students and advance tickets
Composers Concordance Chamber Orchestra (CCCO), Lara St. John - violin, Valerie Coleman - flute, Thomas Carlo Bo - conductor

In 1893, legendary Czech composer Antonín Dvořák spoke in NYC of the influence of Native American and African American music on his Symfonie. He urged American composers to focus attention on what "must" be the foundation for "the future music of this country." The concert program is entitled 'Legends', recalling the timeless melodies of Dvořák himself, and examining the influence of Native American and African American music on contemporary orchestral composition. Conducted by Thomas Carlo Bo, this debut performance of CCCO features violinist Lara St. John and flutist Valerie Coleman (of Imani Winds) as soloists. Moreover, each member of this orchestra is a true champion of contemporary music, including bass trombonist Dave Taylor, pianist Taka Kigawa, percussionist Peter Jarvis, violinist Lynn Bechtold, and oboist Keve Wilson, among others. Don't miss this event, to include the distinctive compositions of Valerie Coleman, Dan Cooper, Patrick Hardish (Founding Director), Otto Luening ('Potawatomi Legends'), Milica Paranosic, Joseph Pehrson (Founding Director), Gene Pritsker, and Dave Soldier. http://www.oslmusic.org/dimenna-center-welcome

Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire was premiered at the Berlin Choralion-Saal on 16 October 1912. The small mixed ensemble that Schoenberg invented for this masterpiece of early atonal music has over the last 100 years become a ‘standard ensemble’, spawning a large repertoire for this grouping of instruments by subsequent composers.

Pierrot Lunaire is a three-part work that sets German translations of poems by Albert Giraud. The eight instruments played by five performers are arranged differently in every number and produce an amazing variety of sound. A striking feature of the work is the vocalist’s Sprechstimme (speech-singing), an eerie declamation between song and speech, where the pitch is sounded but not held; instead, the vocalist immediately leaves the note, falling or rising to the next.

The first of three performances of Pierrot Lunaire in our 25th anniversary season follows a CBSO performance of Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony. Composed just 20 years before Schoenberg’s tour de force, Bruckner’s symphony is one of late Romantic music’s most overwhelming experiences.

Concert preceded by a free 30-minute piano recital at 6.15pm, performed by one of the rising stars of Birmingham Conservatoire.

The Magnificat Antiphons for the last seven days of Advent, the Great O Anthems, have inspired composers over the centuries and London Concord Singers present a survey of the settings, each anthem set by a different composer. One anthem is sung to the original plainchant whilst another is in a setting by the 17th century English composer Robert Ramsey, the remaining settings are by contemporary composers from Estonia, Poland and the UK. Those of Arvo Pärt, Pavel Lukaszewski, Bob Chilcott and Keith Roberts are from taken from complete settings of all seven antiphons. Whilst that of Cecilia MacDowell, which was premiered earlier this year, is from a set commissioned from seven different composers by Merton College Choir. The Magnificat Antiphons will be complemented by a magnificent Magnificat by Andrea Gabrieli for three choirs.

The concert will be completed with a selection of music for Advent including the premiere of Robert Hugill’s advent motet Propre es tu.

Arvo Pärt : O Immanuel, from Sieben Magnificat-Antiphonen
Pawel Lukaszewski : O Radix Jesse, from Antiphonae (O Antiphons)
Bob Chilcott : O Adonai, from Advent Antiphons
Keith Roberts : O Clavis David, from Veni
Cecilia McDowall : O Oriens
Robert Hugill : Propre es tu
