QUATUOR DIOTIMA
Known for their bold explorations of contemporary repertoire, Quatuor Diotima return to Spitalfields contrasting four radically different works amid the atmospheric backdrop of Shoreditch Church.
At the centre of the performance, is the world premiere Sam Hayden’s newly commissioned Transience. This is contrasted with his late mentor Jonathan Harvey’s frenetic third quartet, often regarded as a ‘modern masterpiece’, French composer Gérard Pesson’s Bitume, written for Quatuor Diotima and premiered in 2013, and the bold emotional palette of Bartók’s String Quartet No.4.

The Clerks
Edward Wickham director
A new work of live and recorded music incorporating music by Isaac, JS Bach and Webern devised by Edward Wickham with music by Christopher Fox
Vocal group The Clerks take you on a journey through musical ‘hauntings’ in a new work exploring the way we hear, remember and recall music. Following a traditional melody that has been used by composers across generations, from Bach to Webern, they immerse you in sound, moving from the contemporary to the ancient and back again, in a series of ‘hallucinations’ linking music from across the centuries.

Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 7.30pm RILEY: IN C Kings Place Kings Cross, London United Kingdom
London Sinfonietta
As John Adams once described it, minimalism is to music what spring cleaning is to our environment. What better way to start the new year afresh than two concerts of minimalism’s most celebrated composers, whose music holds listeners in a joyous, hypnotic soundworld. The first is a performance of Terry Riley’s In C, a work that defined a new style of composition. The first half will consist of works which were inspired by, or written as a tribute to, In C.
This concert is followed one month later by a stack of must-see Steve Reich pieces including Clapping Music, performed by Reich himself; click here for details.
Part of the Kings Place Minimalism Unwrapped series.
