As both internationally-renowned composer and visionary conductor, Thomas Adès is one of the most compelling figures in the contemporary arts, bringing a unique insight to everything he performs.
Today, Ravel’s fairy-tale ballet and Adès’ own orchestral tour de force Tevot (composed for the Berlin Philharmonic) book-end two fantastic premieres from renowned contemporary pianist Nicolas Hodges: the exuberant piano concertino No seré yo quien diga nada by the young Spanish composer Francisco Coll, and a new Piano Concerto by musical maverick Gerald Barry.

Sunrise: A Song for Two Humans, filmed by Murnau in 1927 upon his arrival in the United States is considered a masterpiece. Sunrise embraces a forest of signs, of images and novel techniques. The city springs up in the middle of the country; comedy entwined with the monstrous, superimposed images, a montage of realism and the fantastic. A perfect cinematic dawn? Murnau never chose specific music to accompany the polyphonic image of his screaming, whispering drama. The composer Helmut Oehring, born to deaf-mute parents, rises to the challenge of a melodrama without mirroring the film's intentions: Seven Songs for Sunrise performed by David Moss with the support of a chamber ensemble and the Sine Nomine Quartet.

Dare you enter the House of Usher? It’s a dark, mysterious place, seemingly with a mind of its own. In their one act operas Claude Debussy and Gordon Getty bring Edgar Allan Poe’s macabre tale to the operatic stage.
Both operas cast a magnificently oppressive spell of menace and unease. Opera is rarely associated with the chills of the horror genre but this double bill achieves the nerve shredding effect of the best horror films.

The concert opens with Transit Underground, a powerful and rhythmic piece from one of Sweden's premiere young contemporary composers, Tobias Broström. Immerse yourself into Nordic landscapes with the rich colourful romantic sounds of Alfvén’s Mountain King Suite and the finale, Gothe’s intense and brooding Second Symphony. Hear pianist Clare Hammond give a delightful solo interlude, with piano music from early twentieth century Swedish composer Ture Rangström.

The time of beginning based on Ovid, the time of the first men, the time of civilizations: Raphaël Cendo has arranged his epic for choir, ensemble, and electronics in three large chapters, with, by way of an epilogue, uses this fragment of Heraclitus: If one does not hope, one will not find the unhoped-for, since there is no trail leading to it and no path. Registre des lumières, according to the composer, designates the book of memories, "memory of lights that transmitted a common, far away, past, milestones of our Humanity". What inexorable force can push the limits of the possible? As an epilogue, but not a reply, this fragment by Heraclitus, "If you do not hope, you will not win that which is not hoped for, since it is unattainable and inaccessible."

Two lovers find themselves trapped in a bitter power battle, a demonstration of humanity's appalling capacity for hatred that will eventually tear them apart. This intense tale of love, heartbreak and obsessive manipulation exposes the raw, primeval foundations that lurk beneath all our carefully manicured lives.
Heiner Müller took inspiration from Laclos' Les Liaisons dangereuses for his 1980 play Quartett, and Francesconi set it almost word for word in this chamber opera, using his own English translation. Quartett was acclaimed at its 2011 premiere at La Scala, Milan, praised for its unique and profoundly affecting musical vocabulary. The UK premiere uses a new staging created by director John Fulljames for the Linbury Studio Theatre. It is the second of two major music theatre collaborations that bookend the London Sinfonietta season.

Fresh off its recent Tchaikovsky production at BAM Fisher, the Ensemble of the Romantic Century (ERC) presents another fully staged theatrical concert interweaving drama and music about one of the most famous trials of the 19th century. Delivered by a top-caliber cast in an intimate setting, The Trial of Oscar Wilde focuses on the tragic shackling, public scrutiny, and subsequent imprisonment of the homosexual playwright/writer Oscar Wilde (1854-1900).

A concert at Maida Vale Studios to celebrate the music of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies in the year of his 80th birthday.
Hear two London premieres from the composer, Throstle's Nest Junction and A Spell for Green Corn performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, soloist Chloë Hanslip and conductor Michael Seal. The concert finale is his monumental masterwork Worldes Blis, a piece which Davies himself conducted for the notorious world premiere with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1969.
Please note Michael Seal replaces Peter Rundel as conductor for this concert.

Since its formation in 1987, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group has given the world première performances of over 150 works and brought many other scores to life in the UK.
The ensemble’s Wigmore Hall programme includes chamber works by BCMG’s two Artists-in-Association, Oliver Knussen and John Woolrich, together with pieces by other composers central to contemporary classical music’s development. Elliott Carter’s piano trio Epigrams, first performed by BCMG at the 2013 Aldeburgh Festival, is introduced to London, framed by Colin Matthews’s Berceuse for Elliott, written shortly after Carter’s death, and Hans Werner Henze’s hauntingly beautiful serenade for violin, cello and piano, Adagio adagio.

As delightful as they are dark, fairy tales fire the imaginations of every generation. Composers have never been able to resist their appeal. Here the Hallé offers an enchanting afternoon which opens with the overture to Humperdinck’s ginger-bread opera, 'Hansel and Gretel', and includes music from Ravel’s 'Mother Goose'.
Coming right up to date, there will be a premiere of a new piece based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 'The Wild Swans' – written specially for the Hallé Children’s Choir, featuring young actors from Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as over 200 young singers from Greater Manchester.

Mozart and Machines could be the subtitle to this intriguing programme of music for wind instruments. Beginning with arrangements for wind quintet of works that Mozart wrote originally for mechanical organ and glass harmonica, it ends with the beloved Serenade for 13 winds (well, actually 12 winds and double bass). Philip Cashian’s rhythmic, witty work takes its inspiration from another mechanical curiosity, Settala’s Machine, a 17th century mechanical devil.

Memory and reflection run through this evening of rhythmic, dancing music. Reich’s powerful, haunting Different Trains weaves the recorded recollections of Pullman Porters, a 1940s nanny and holocaust survivors through the colours of the string quartet, while Martland’s work for marimba and quartet dances through memories of Africa beneath a starry sky.

50 years after Robert Moog first presented his monophonic synthesizer to the world, Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory brings together no fewer than 10 Moogs on stage.
With a lineup including composer Graham Fitkin and Portishead’s Adrian Utley, the Ensemble performs Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3, excerpts from John Carpenter’s sci-fi fantasy Escape From New York and a new piece by Gregory featuring a specially developed device that synchronises the synths together like a huge player piano. The second half features a score by Will Gregory played live to a poignant film The Service Of Tim Henman.
The Will Gregory Moog Ensemble first performed together in 2005 as part of the Bath Festival, recreating some of the ‘Switched on Bach’ arrangements of Wendy Carlos in the Seventies. As one half of the electronic music sensation Goldfrapp, the keyboard-player and composer Will Gregory is one of the UK’s leading advocates of using synthesizers and electronic instruments to create new sounds and reinvent old ones. The band perform a mixture of specially composed music, transcriptions of classical works, and their own versions of music from popular culture and film scores.
