Jaap van Zweden Conductor
With Mahler’s Sixth—a tour de force for virtuoso orchestra—Maestro Jaap van Zweden and the HK Phil invite you to continue on our musical journey of Mahler’s symphonies. Within the Symphony’s compelling sonorities you’ll also hear passages of extraordinary beauty and calm—like the soaring “Alma theme”—a portrait of the composer’s wife—and sounds of cowbells from distant alpine pastures. In the last movement, listen for the three hammer blows of fate, “the last of which fells the hero like the stroke of an axe,” Mahler revealed. You are bound to feel the anguish of the prophecy. The concert opens with the world premiere of a new commission by the young American-Chinese composer Conrad Tao, The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Composer-in-Residence for our 2016/17 season.Conrad Tao : New Work
