London-born George Benjamin began composing at the age of seven and gained granite-like foundations for his future career through childhood composition and piano lessons with Peter Gellhorn. He went on to study with Olivier Messiaen in Paris and Alexander Goehr at Cambridge University, while attracting international attention with his orchestral work Ringed by the Flat Horizon. Wigmore Hall’s George Benjamin Series, a significant addition to the venue’s growing commitment to contemporary chamber music and song, presents fascinating perspectives on the composer’s diverse works within the context of programmes of music by his influences and colleagues.
