UK Premiere of David Bruce's lagerphone-stomping song-cycle 'Piosenki'

Performances of two colourful and folk-inspired compositions by two of the UKs most talented and original voices.

Bruce's Piosenki features his homemade 'lagerphone', a 6ft percussion instrument made out of spade handles and lager bottle tops.

Praised as 'Masterful' by Albany Times and as 'vivacious..colourful...the highlight' by NY Times, Piosenki was commissioned by Carnegie Hall and premiered there in 2007. It has gone on to have numerous repeat performances in the US, including by world-renowned soprano Dawn Upshaw. Piosenki sets childrens poems by Polish poet Julian Tuwim as well as Polish playground chants. Reflecting Tuwim's Jewish heritage it is a klezmer-tinged work, but also contains numerous other folk influences from Poland and other Eastern European traditions. This will be it's UK premiere.

Errollyn Wallen's From Fair Eleanor to Sweet William was commissioned by BCMG and is a colourful setting/re-imagining of an old English folk song.

A large mixed ensemble is used for both pieces, performed by Tete a Tete favourites Chroma, conducted by Tim Murray. Soprano Melissa Wegner and Baritone Kyle Ferrill feature in Piosenki, while Errolyn Wallen herself sings her own piece.
