A co-production with Theatr Brycheiniog

Miss Julie: the story of a woman scorned and a jealous man, of greed, lust and infidelity. The transgression of class and sex. A potent mix that can only end in tragedy.

Midsummer's Night, the shortest night of the year, and a night for wild celebration. The scene is set in the kitchen of a large house. Outside a dance is taking place….

Music Theatre Wales is thrilled to present the UK premiere this intimate, intense and strikingly beautiful new opera by Philippe Boesmans: a re-telling of August Strindberg’s classic, groundbreaking drama “Miss Julie” in a powerful new production directed by Michael McCarthy and conducted by Michael Rafferty.

“vivid, intensely dramatic and bursting with colour and invention…” Opera magazine

Acknowledged as one of the most successful contemporary opera companies in Europe, Music Theatre Wales has been bringing the very best chamber opera to venues throughout the country for the past 20 years. Recent successes include The Piano Tuner by Nigel Osborne, Michael Tippett’s The Knot Garden and Lynne Plowman’s House of the Gods.

The power and passion of opera on an intimate scale.

Julie was commissioned by Théâtre Royale de La Monnaie, Brussels, the Aix-en-Provence Festival and the Vienna Festival and was first performed in 2005.
