BCMG - The Series 2007-08
CBSO Centre Berkley Street, Birmingham, B1 2LF United Kingdom http://www.cbso.co.ukConductor Oliver Knussen
Electronics UCE Birmingham Conservatoire & Birmingham University*
BCMG is one of the world’s leading classical new music ensembles and was formed by players from the CBSO. The group is devoted to the performance of new music and has commissioned and performed over 100 world premieres of new works by today’s leading composers. Mark-Anthony Turnage plunges into the city sounds of today; Julian Anderson listens more to echoes from distant times and places. The contrast is refreshing. Turnage’s brilliant overture Snapshots is followed by music from his enthusiastically received new ballet score From All Sides. Anderson’s capacious Book of Hours offers bell sounds, golden electronic resonances and sprays of folk melody. In between, Oliver Knussen presents music by the wonderful Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, who died in 1940 at the age of 40. Revueltas was a modernist who profitted from local dance rhythms, the tumultuousness of an imagined Maya past, and his own sunny disposition. His Sensemaya is the Latin American Rite of Spring.
