BCMG The Series
CBSO Centre, Birmingham United Kingdom Conductor: THOMAS ADÈS
Counter-tenors: ANDREW WATTS, WILLIAM PUREFOY *
Tenor: CHRISTOPHER LEMMINGS *
Baritone: RODERICK WILLIAMS *
Bass: STEPHEN RICHARDSON *
Thomas Adès, in demand as much for his conducting as for his compositional skills, begins his programme with one of the pieces that made his name, his brilliant and unexpected, unexpectable one-movement Chamber Symphony of 1991. Tansy Davies, who belongs to the same generation, waited a little longer before astonishing audiences with her vividness and nerve. Her new piece Falling Angel takes its name from that of a painting by the German catastrophe artist Anselm Kiefer. The second half belongs to the Irish composer Gerald Barry and to his The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit, a musical morality play in which the composer reflects upon — and exemplifies — the hedonist’s dream ‘to manage as many delicious moments as one can’. (Paul Griffiths)
