The Purcell-Britten-Stravinsky strands of this year’s Festival make a first appearance here, alongside Adès’ cool, disturbing Tennessee Williams setting (‘a tragic snapshot of despair’), Woolrich’s reworking of some rare Brahms, and Maw’s tender memorial piece for fellow composer Stephen Oliver. With W. H. Auden, Stravinsky created an intimate piece of public mourning for Kennedy, and his three quartet pieces from 1914 are a fascinating seedbed for future, larger works.
