John Dowland's 'Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares Figured in Seaven Passionate Pavans', a set of exquisite workings for a consort of five viols and lute of one melody, cast such a spell over contemporary listeners that the Lachrimae theme became the best known tune in Europe for several decades. Rediscovered in the 20th century by Peter Warlock and Benjamin Britten, the Lachrimae Pavans continue to fascinate today. Concordia also celebrates their 400th birthday with the London premieres of a companion set of pieces specially commissioned from leading English composers of our own time.
