Oliver Knussen premieres a new BBC commission from Detlev Glanert, whose Third Symphony made such an impression at the Proms in 1996, alongside his own settings of four Walt Whitman poems. Stravinsky's fairy-tale ballet on themes from Tchaikovsky and Hans Christian Andersen is contrasted with Lyadov's trilogy of tone-poems on more traditional Russian folk tales.
