Description
Outside Track combines dramatic writing, music and actors to evoke the lives of London's hidden citizens – the homeless, the refugee – and to show sport as a powerful way of expressing inner wounds and triumphs. The characters in Outside Track are based upon stories told by their subjects to Andy in his other life as a welfare and support worker. Andy is delighted, as he knows that his ex-clients would be, with how Linda has post-hoc taken their stories back to the wider diaspora and latched directly onto their spirit and terroir. Andy and Linda worked together line by line so that text and music intricately combine to reflect the characters' emotions and situations. The music is semi-operatic in style, but mainly without vocal lines. It references at some points an impromptu band, the denizens of the gazebo, who gigged, and hopefully still gig, in some of outer London's more bucolic teashops. The piece presented as part of Cool Fusion, featuring a unique athletic mission, is a short excerpt from the complete work.
