Description
The Spring Hornpipe was composed over a two month period while riding the Toronto subway to and from work. It is comprised of three different un-delineated sections: a syncopated fanfare introduction, a Bach-like march and an arching lyrical sequence which rises excitedly to a brisk and neatly punctuated ending.
A hornpipe is defined as being ‘an old English dance in a lively duple time signature’. The Spring Hornpipe’s overall mood is of excited anticipation and is intended to be a fun piece heralding the imminent arrival and possibilities of spring.
