Czech composer Pavel Haas (1899-1944) was one of the more significant composers whose life was tragically cut short due to the Holocaust. He is most famous for his 1937 opera, 'U Sarlatan' (The Sharlatan), based on Joseph Winkler's novel, 'Doktor Eisenbart'. First performed in Brno, this work indicated to the world that a significant voice in the Czech musical scene would be forever snuffed out.
