North Star - Solo for Violin For centuries, mariners and travellers in the northern hemisphere have relied on Polaris, the North Star, to help them find their direction. Using its position in the night sky defining 'north', they could trace their path forward in the wildnesses of land or sea. And, if hope of return failed - as it sometimes did - they could find some comfort in its light shining steadily above them.
This piece was written in response to the life and work of one of Canada's master fiddlers, composers, and teachers, Oliver Schroer. For countless people he embodied the essence of a 'North Star'. Oliver graciously accepted the dedication several months before his untimely death in mid-2008.
