Dance of Triumph Composer: Marilyn Herman
Words by Denise Alonzo
Soprano: Denise Alonzo
Piano: Elizabeth Dockrell-Tyler
This work, which includes piano solos, draws on influences from Trinidadian calypso and South American indigenous vocal music, as well as being situated within the Western Classical musical tradition; a sonic celebration of the author’s heritage.
I come from far away
A lush and sunny land
Steeped in colour
Sweet zephyr breezes
A dance of triumph found me here
My ancestral colours rolled into one
And as the dance of life
stamps out the echoes
of struggle and strife
The time is soon
when the richness of my heritage
will unfold
With only goodness as my mirror
In the eyes of whom
emptiness and ignorance
cannot reflect

Michal 06 For solo clarinet in Bb.
This work starts off as jazz, then progressing into a section based on oriental-style modes, which in turn progresses into a section which is Impressionistic in character. Although these three styles are so contrasting, the transition from one into the other seems seamless and natural. In the final section, these three styles are fused.

 					 At One Composer: Marilyn Herman
Clare Thorn: Trumpet in Bb
Impromptu String Quartet
This work, which contains strong jazz influences, was written with the idea of bestowing healing and calmness – a feeling of being at one with the world. In the last section, the trumpet has the option to improvise over string chords, or to play what has been pre-written by the composer. In this performance, the trumpet player has chosen to improvise.
