Summary:Composition Programme

Details: As a participant in the Full Composition Program, you will:

• have your music performed by our guest musicians in the festival’s evening concerts held at cultural and historical sites throughout Pavia. All concerts are professionally recorded and filmed. The recordings will be shared with all the composers on the last day of the festival. For the 2020 edition you can submit: 1) music for cello quartet (Quartetto Zuena); 2) music for flute (piccolo, soprano, or bass) and guitar (classical or electric) duo with or without electronics, fixed or live A/V media, and/or amplification (unassisted fold); 3) music for percussion solo (Simone Beneventi); 4) electroacoustic fixed media stereo work with or without video (acousmatic, music concréte, soundscape, electronic music, etc.): stereo diffusion and video projection.
• be mentored during the rehearsal of your music. You might also be contacted by our performers before the festival via email or Skype for a first reading of the score together;
• attend two lectures and two public masterclasses with our guests of honor Judith Weir and Steven Mackey;
• present your music at the Composition Colloquium, a daily masterclass led by David Ludwig, Helena Tulve and Dmitri Tymoczko. You will receive a public composition lesson from one of them and you will receive feedbacks by all the other participant composers;
• have individual composition lessons with David Ludwig, Helena Tulve and Dmitri Tymoczko. You will have a private lesson with each of them, excluding the one who will give you a public lesson during your Composition Colloquium;
• attend daily lectures on composition, contemporary techniques, idiomatic writing, and advanced music theory by our international faculty members Giovanni Albini, Giovanni Cestino, Amy Beth Kristen (remote lecture), David Ludwig, Mani Mazinani, Christopher Theofanidis (remote lecture), and Dmitri Tymoczko;
• attend intensive short workshops by Helena Tulve, David Ludwig, and Dmitri Tymoczko;
• attend a seminar led by Alberto Barberis, “An introduction to web audio API”, and learn how to develop your own artistic web audio app;
• attend a seminar led by Giovanni Cestino, “Musicological Tools for Artistic Research”, and explore some of the critical tools that musicology can offer to composers in the practice of artistic research;
• attend a workshop led by Valerio Febbroni, “It sound like a recorder!”, and learn how to idiomatically compose for the recorder. Some of the scores produced during the workshop will be performed during a highSCORE concert;
• be a member of the highSCORE New Music Center, and join one of the largest international networks of contemporary music, accessing new opportunities, commissions, collaboration and performances. An interview with you led by our musicologist in residence, Giovanni Cestino will be published in the highSCORE Proceedings, and your biographical information will appear in our database.

You will also have access to:
• a welcome buffet;
• a guided tour of the city of Pavia;
• all the festival’s concerts.

The tuition for the Full Composition Program is 1,999 Euros. APPLY NOW!

Tuition includes full accommodation in a shared room at the university campus from August, 10 (check-in) to August, 22 (check-out) . Each apartment is equipped with kitchen, bathroom, and free wireless internet connection. The facility also includes a study room, a self-service laundry, a bicycle parking area, a newly built fitness center, a beauty SPA, covered and open air pools, and a cafeteria. A roommate will be assigned to each participant, unless preference for a specific roommate is otherwise stated. A free transportation pass for city buses as well as a festival personal ID card will be provided to every participant. Our English speaking staff will be available and assisting 24 hours a day.
Not covered in tuition is airfare, passport fees, transportation to/from the festival, meals, laundry, phone charges, activities/entertainment during free periods, supplementary maid service, any insurance, etc.

Light composition program
As a participant in the Light Composition Program, you will:
• attend two lectures and two public masterclasses with our guests of honor Judith Weir and Steven Mackey;
