Association Ensemble Xenia (Turin, Italy) is happy to announce Call for Scores of the 18th EstOvest Festival, open to candidates born after January 1st 1984 from all over the world.

EstOvest Festival: a journey in today’s music
The aim of the EstOvest Festival is exchange between different cultures : on the one hand the Festival encourages integration and comparison of ancient musical traditions with contemporary expression; on the other hand the artistic journey revisits the western avant- garde compositions, in a spirit of creative research.

This year’s EstOvest Festival, entitled “Tamburi di latta” (The Tin Drums) examines the concept of Silence from different perspectives, placing attention on thought, on intellectual structures and on the Weltanschauung of the participating artists

Requirements
Composers, through the ages, have often combined the piano with various stringed instruments , for instance the Mozart quartets and the quintets of Schumann, Brahms and Shostakovich. It is a much rarer occurance to combine the harp, on an equal plain, with the string quartet.

The 2019 Call for Scores has thus decided to invite composers to experiment with this combination of instruments, taking the Brahms piano quintet op.34 as a reference point. A cameristic approach, a symphonic approach can be sollecited to create an imposing and mobile work while also creating an intimate and interior atmpsphere. Taking into account the possibilities of exploring the sound world of the harp, instead of a piano, a rarefied and barely audible sound makes it possible to imagine silence.

The selected composer will be asked to write a work for the opening night of the Festival, for the project “Sublimation".

Elements that need to be taken into consideration for the commissioned work are an equilibrium between sound and silence, between legato and staccato, between a homogenous and dissolute evolution of the musical content. It will be interesting to see how the candidate will use the intruments, how their potential will be developed, and how the different nature of each instrument will co-exist.

The score must be written for harp and string quartet. The work should last be between 5 and 7 minutes and will be performed by members of NEXT-New Ensemble Xenia Turin and Geneviève Létang, harpist of Ensemble Linea.
