Black House New Music Workshop

 Black House New Music Workshop
Summary:Workshop Opportunity
Deadline: 15 August 2018
Date Posted: 25 July 2018
Details: Black House’s 16th new music workshop will be part of the 2019 Oh My Ears festival in Phoenix, Arizona. The goal of the Black House workshops is to create a supportive laboratory for musicians to connect and support each other while creating new music. Participation in the workshop is completely free and there is no application fee. Lodging will be available but participants are responsible for their own travel. This workshop will give musicians attending the Oh My Ears New Music Festival an opportunity to work together premiering newly composed music in an informal and fun way.

Workshop Details
Musicians may apply as performing or composing residents. All residents will meet for a two-day intensive on Friday morning (Feb 1) through Saturday evening (Feb 2). Participation in the workshop will not interfere with performance times in the festival.

Composing Resident Information
Composing residents will write a new 6-9 minute piece for the entire workshop ensemble (no subsets). The instrumentation of the ensemble will be made available shortly after artist selection. Finished compositions with parts must be provided by Friday, Dec 7, 5pm, mst. In order to receive feedback, make any necessary revisions and give the performers time to prepare. There is very little time to put together these pieces, so pieces that require a lot of tech will not do well. The rule of thumb is that if you can’t quickly set up it and tear it down by yourself, you’re better off writing something purely acoustic. Composers must be able to attend the workshop. The BHC has a very DIY ethos and preference will be given to composers who are willing to help and generally be useful beyond simply submitting their scores.

Performing Resident Information
Performing residents will be selected to be play in the workshop ensemble. Players are expected to play at a high level and to have prepared the music before the workshop.
