Details: The Megalopolis Saxophone Orchestra (MSO) announces its first-ever Call for Scores, aimed to highlight and strengthen the saxophone’s role in the 21st century.

Composers are invited to submit saxophone quartets to be performed by members of the MSO throughout the 2018-19 season. Four winners will be selected to have their works performed at a concert in either Boston or New York City, and all concerts will be recorded.

Of these four winners, one will be awarded the title of Composer-in-Residence for the season; a position that includes a $500 commissioning fee towards the composition of a new work for saxophone orchestra. The opportunity also includes a chance to lecture on their music at Brookline Adult and Music Education, a performance of their saxophone quartet, and a chance to work closely with the MSO while composing a new work for the ensemble.

Guidelines:
1. ELIGIBILITY: The MSO’s Call for Scores is open to all composers who are under the age of thirty-five (35) as of June 1st, 2018.

2. LOGISTICS:
• Applications must be submitted through the form below
• Application deadline: June 1st, 2018
• Application must be submitted with a fee of $10 (a PayPal link will appear upon submission)
• Multiple submissions are permissible, however each require a separate application fee
• Scores must be submitted digitally in PDF format
o All scores should include your name as part of the file (i.e. lastname_title.pdf)
• Recordings are preferred, but not required (MIDI is acceptable)
• Applicants will be notified of the results by July 15th, 2018

3. PRIZES:
• First Prize:
o Quartet is performed by members of the MSO in either New York City or Boston
o Recording of the composer’s quartet from the above concert is provided
o Named Composer-in-Residence for the MSO’s 2018-19 season, culminating with a new work for the Megalopolis Saxophone Orchestra in the Spring of 2019
o Opportunity to lecture on their works at Brookline Adult and Community Education (Brookline, MA)
o $500 Commissioning Fee
• Second, Third, and Fourth Prize:
o Quartet is performed by members of the MSO in either New York City or Boston
o Recording of the composer’s quartet from the above concert is provided
o Composers will be asked to submit headshots, professional bios, and recordings to be featured on the MSO’s website and social media channels

4. COMPOSITION:
• Total performance time for the composition is limited to no more than fifteen (15) minutes.
• Works must be scored for four (4) saxophones, either:
o (1) Soprano, (1) alto, (1) tenor, and (1) baritone
o (2) Alto, (1) tenor, and (1) baritone
• Works must have been written within the last five (5) years as of June 1st, 2018.
• Works that have been previously published, performed in concert, or commercially recorded are welcome to be submitted.
• Works incorporating prepared saxophone(s) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
• At this time, we are not able to support works with electronics for the upcoming season.
