Après L’Histoire

 Après L’Histoire
Summary:Septet plus narrator commission
Deadline: 16 March 2018
Date Posted: 22 February 2018
Details: To celebrate the centennial anniversary of Igor Stravinsky & C.F. Ramuz’s L’Histoire du soldat, Après L’Histoire is commissioning two new works for septet plus narrator through a competitive call-for-proposals process. Stravinsky and Ramuz’s composition, which warns of unchecked ambition and materialism amidst a global topography of musical styles, has not diminished whatsoever in relevance. By commissioning new works to pair with L’Histoire du soldat, Après L’Histoire seeks to breathe new life into Stravinsky’s classic work by expanding the repertoire and creating opportunities for living composers and authors to reflect in kind.

Timeline:
• March 16, 2018 – Deadline for submissions
• June 3, 2018 – Two winning composers are announced and commissioned
• 2018-19 concert season – Two new compositions are premiered, date(s) TBD

Commission Details:
• The winning composers will each receive a $1,000 commission fee
• Composers are responsible for securing the rights (and any costs incurred) to their text whether it is to be newly written, secured from an existing publishing company, or already available in public domain, etc.
• Composers will be invited to attend rehearsals and performance(s), though won’t be required to do so, since travel funds cannot be provided by Après L’Histoire. If composers cannot be present, rehearsals will be recorded for comments
• Each commissioned composition must be a minimum of 12 minutes long (not including additional spoken text) and use Stravinsky’s entire instrumental septet (violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, percussion) plus a narrator. Additional use of staging, movement, occasional singing, and/or visual media(s) will be considered
• Each new composition will be professionally filmed. Although the resulting audio and video files will be shared with the winning composers, we do not guarantee permission to publish video recordings of the works in their entirety
• Après L’Histoire will have the exclusive right to performing and recording the winning compositions for the first two years following their premieres
• There are no eligibility restrictions
