August 9-12, 2018 | Wayne, NJ

Hindustani tabla player Shawn Mativetsky and composer Payton MacDonald team up to co-teach an intensive workshop where you will:
• Receive intensive training in the rhythmic fundamentals of North Indian classical music.
• Receive individualized instruction on the best practices for working with Hindustani musicians and incorporating elements of Indian music organically into the music you write.
• Compose and workshop your own concerto for tabla and percussion quartet.
• Record your concerto with Shawn Mativetsky and the legendary New Jersey Percussion Ensemble.

Program Info

Starting in mid-June, each participant will take 3 online lectures and 2 online private lessons with Shawn Mativetsky and Payton MacDonald. From August 9-12, 2018, participants will attend a 4-day workshop at William Paterson University, in Wayne, NJ. The workshop will include readings, discussion and a recording session with the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble.
Tuition: $675 (covers all class materials and audio recording).
Tuition to audit the workshop: $300.

How to Apply

Applicants are not required to have any previous training in Hindustani music. However, they must have a working knowledge of Western composition, at least at the undergraduate level.
Fill out the application form at www.shastramusic.com/summer-intensive-rhythm and upload 1-2 representative scores in PDF format, and recordings, if available, in MP3 format. Two scores and their respective recordings are encouraged.

WORKSHOP 2: SHASTRA SUMMER WORKSHOP SERIES: COMPOSING WITH INDIAN VOICE

July 1 – August 12, 2018 | Los Angeles, CA

Have you ever wanted to learn the basics of Indian classical music, or deepen your knowledge of the art form? Have you been interested in incorporating Indian musicians into the music you write? This workshop, hosted by Shastra and SAM Academy of Music, is an opportunity for Western-trained composers to do exactly that.

Hindustani vocalist Saili Oak and composer Reena Esmail team up to co-teach a six-week intensive workshop where you will

• Receive intensive training in the fundamentals of Hindustani (North Indian) classical music.
• Receive instruction on the best practices for working with Hindustani musicians and incorporating elements of Indian music organically into the music you write.
• Compose your own arrangement of a Hindustani bhajan for Indian singer and string quartet.
• Workshop, perform and record this arrangement with Saili Oak and string quartet.
• Future performance opportunities of your arrangement in the US and India by Saili Oak (a number of past participants have enjoyed subsequent performances of their work).

Program Info

This summer intensive will be comprised of weekly 3-hour lectures and masterclasses by Reena Esmail and Saili Oak from July 1-28, 2018, on Sunday afternoons in Pasadena, CA. A live feed will be offered for online participants.

All participants are encouraged to attend a final three-day session, August 10-12, 2018 in Los Angeles, CA, comprised of reading and recording sessions with Saili and string quartet.
