Young Women Composers Camp

 Young Women Composers Camp
Summary:Opportunity for Young Female Composers
Deadline: 01 March 2018
Date Posted: 15 February 2018
Details: The young women composers camp aims to amplify the voices of young women, to allow them access to a high level of musical training, and to close the gender gap in the music composition field and create a more equitable music sector. We strive to be accessible and inclusive to anyone who identifies as female or non-binary.

Camp description

The Young Women Composers Camp is a two-week music festival for students who are interested in pursuing a career in music composition or a related field. The courses offered in our first year focus on a broad range of compositional skills, including sessions on writing for different instrument families, song writing, and jazz composition, among others. Please visit the Classes and Schedule page for more information on current course listings.

The camp will run from 9am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday from July 9th to July 20th, 2018. All camp activities will take place on the Temple main campus, and students will spend most of their time in Presser Hall (2001 N. 13th St).

For our inaugural year, we are partnering with the Sō Percussion Summer Institute in Princeton, NJ. YWCC students will visit the institute for a day, where they will participate in workshops, attend a performance, and get to meet and talk with the faculty and students there. Students will also meet with Sarah Kirkland Snider, who is one of our guest composers for the 2018 season. Please visit the SōSI website for more information on their programs and offerings.

Eligibility

Any student between the ages of 14-19 as of July 9th, 2018 who identifies as female or non-binary is welcome to apply. Our program serves as a college preparatory program, so any student who has already completed a semester of college is ineligible for the camp regardless of age.

Final concert

Our final concert will take place on July 20th (the last day of camp) and will be a recital of student compositions. Students will work on their piece during the first week of camp, and will rehearse with professional musicians during the second week leading up to the performance. The performance will take place at Rock Hall (1715 N. Broad St.) and will be professionally recorded and digitally distributed to the students after the camp has ended. A small reception will follow the performance. This free performance is open to all family, friends, and community members!
