South Tyneside Council and The Customs House are seeking a songwriter to work with the Library Voices Choir at The Word in South Shields as part of the Arts in Libraries Programme, funded by Arts Council England.

The appointed songwriter will work with Library Voices to create a new composition that the group will rehearse and record, before performing it live at The Word in late March. We are particularly interested in a song in the style of a sea shanty that compliments a range of singing abilities. Library Voices is made up of between 20 and 30 members who work entirely unaccompanied.

The appointed songwriter will attend at least two rehearsals (Thursdays at The Word from 6pm to 7:30pm) to meet the group and learn about their stories and personalities. These sessions will also be used to work with the choir to develop ideas. The appointed artist will work with the most interested participants outside of these sessions to continue the song writing process and be involved during the rehearsal and recording period.

The artist fee for the project is £1600, inclusive of expenses.
