Senior Category: For pupils in year 10 and above Brief: Pupils in year 10 upwards are invited to compose a piece for up to a 4 member chamber ensemble with a pupil set brief, lasting at least 2 minutes in duration. The instrumentation maybe any combination of: Piano, Xylophone, Violin and Cello. Guidance: Pupils should investigate the characteristics of instruments, instrumental ensembles and instrumental forms to demonstrate understanding of musical conventions in relation to their chosen genre, style or tradition. They should demonstrate their ability to create and develop musical ideas and structures coherently, relating these to their brief and work to sustain a piece with a varied and creative musical outcome. They may work in any style, subject to their brief. Junior Category: For pupils in years 7 – 9 Brief: to compose a popular song based on a given topic. The topic for 2017 is the Refugee Crisis.
