The Night With… Call for Score for String Quartet

The Night With… Call for Score for String Quartet
Summary:String Quartet Call
Deadline: 24 February 2017
Date Posted: 09 November 2016
Details: Deadline 24th February, 2017

Workshop 2nd May, 2017

Performance 3rd May, 2017

PLEASE NOTE: Attendance at the workshop is required.

The Night With… announces its inaugural call for scores for emerging composers for works for string quartet to be performed at The Night With… the Aurea Quartet, 3rd May, 2017 in the Hug and Pint, Glasgow. The programme will include music by Kevin Volans, Arvo Pärt and Garth Knox.

From the initial submissions up to six works will be chosen for a workshop with the Aurea Quartet on 2nd May in Glasgow (times and venue to be confirmed). Fewer may be selected at the discretion of the judges. At the end of the workshop a winner will be chosen to feature in The Night With… concert on the 3rd May, 2017. This call for scores is as much about finding interesting new music and composers as finding a new work that will fit within the programme.

All scores must be submitted under a pseudonym. Any scores with identifying marks will be discarded.

Works must be for full quartet. Subsets of the ensemble will not be accepted.

Submissions should be between 5 and 10 minutes long.

Pieces must not have been premiered, however they do not necessarily have to be written for this call.

It is recognized that composers can begin their career at any age. Therefor ‘emerging’ is defined by the composer themselves though will be at the discretion of judges. Example definitions of emerging include:

Currently in education or recently left
Have worked with an orchestra for a development opportunity (e.g. RSNO Composers Hub) but not received regular commissions orchestral or otherwise
Not have an exclusive agreement with a publisher
These are not exhaustive examples.

It is intended that the workshop will be documented through recording and photography/film. This is so that the composers involved will have a read-through recording and/or video of their work for their own non-commercial use (e.g. Soundcloud). The workshop will be free but all costs incurred in attending the workshop must be covered by the composer themselves.

Submission Process

Send all submissions info@thenightwith.co.uk with the subject line ‘quartet call for scores – pseudonym’. Within the email include:

-an anonymous score with pseudonym. Filename format: ‘pseudonym_piece-name’
-a midi mockup of the piece (optional)
-biography, up to 350 words in Word format, of composer (this will not be used for judging the shortlist, only for eligibility and marketing if shortlisted)

The Night With is a new concert series set up by composer Matthew Whiteside (www.matthewwhiteside.co.uk) to perform music in a relaxed environment. The intention is to develop it into a monthly concert series running for six months of the year to include new commissions performed by the highest quality players both Scottish and international and promoting music from all eras but with a bias toward contemporary.

The Aurea Quartet

During our first year performing together, the Aurea Quartet (http://aureaquartet.co.uk/) were finalists in the 1st Sándor Végh International String Quartet Competition in Budapest where we were awarded a special prize for our ‘outstanding performance’ of Lajtha String Quartet No.7. We were also winners of the St Martin-in-the-Fields chamber music prize 2014, and after a series of successful auditions, were selected for the Enterprise Music Scotland Residency Project 2014-15, as St John’s Smith Square Young Artists 2014-15, and as resident quartet for the 2015 Wye Valley Chamber Festival. We have subsequently enjoyed playing regularly for audiences throughout Britain and Europe – most recently a concert in the Grand Hall of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.

In 2015, the quartet was invited to perform in the Beethoven Plus series at King’s Place, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Cottier Chamber Project, and the International Musicians Platform Festival. We performed live on BBC Radio 3 (both In Tune and Proms Plus) and on BBC Radio Scotland’s Classics Unwrapped. A busy 2015 has also included exciting collaborations with Daniel Tong, Susan Tomes, Anna Hashimoto and Krysia Ostostowicz. We were recently awarded a place as International Young Artist quartet at the Royal Northern College of Music 2016, and as Young Artists, were invited to Vilnius where we took part in a week of European Chamber Music Academy masterclasses this October.

As a quartet we have been lucky to study with Laura Samuel and David Watkin, and have enjoyed masterclasses with members of the Chilingirian, Dante, Elias, Endellion, Lindsay, London Haydn, and Maggini quartets.
