 Minnesota Varsity
Summary:Young Composer Competition
Deadline: 05 December 2016
Date Posted: 09 November 2016
Details: Minnesota Varsity showcases the top high-school musical talent from Classical Minnesota Public Radio's terrestrial broadcast area (includes parts of MN, WI, ND, SD). Students in these regions are invited to compete in Minnesota Varsity as performers or as composers.

The American Composers Forum partners with Classical MPR for the composition portion of the contest, now in its 5th year! Student composers (ages 14-18 and grades 9-12) are invited to submit one original score (3-7 minutes in length) for any combination of piano, cello and trumpet. Please share this opportunity with the educators and young artists in your network! Submissions to Minnesota Varsity: All rules and instructions can be found at classicalmpr.org/varsity. Submissions close at 9:00am on December 5, 2016.

Up to five composer entrants will be chosen by an ACF panel of judges for the Featured Round. Featured Round Composers will be invited to a workshop day with charter ACF member and composer Carol Barnett and will have their works performed by a trio of graduate students from the University of Minnesota. They will also receive assistance polishing their compositions and presenting them to an audience. In March, the trio and the American Composers Forum will choose two Showcase Composers. The Showcase Composers’ works will be premiered at the Fitzgerald Theater on April 30, 2017 as part of the live broadcast.
