Summary:Orchestra Competition
Deadline: 30 November 2015
Date Posted: 18 November 2015
Details: Project Description
Voortex Live, featuring the Wenatchee Valley Symphony Orchestra, is a visually and musically compelling symphonic and cinematic experience that will showcase the diversity of North Central Washington landscapes set to symphonic music. The presentation will feature original cinematic scores and a visual presentation using original cinematography.

Composer Eligibility
The contest is open to composers of all ages who reside in north central Washington (Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan and Grant Counties) or have resided in the same region for at least two years. Student composers who attend a Washington State public or private school are also eligible.

Instrumentation
Instrumentation may include up to the following: chamber-size string section, 2 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinet, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba and 2 percussion (standard multi-percussion, timpani, mallet percussion and drum kit). Compositions employing additional instruments, pre-recorded sounds or additional performers will not be considered. Concertos, symphonies, vocal or choral works, and works for string orchestra, woodwind or brass ensemble, are not eligible.

Style
Composers are encouraged to think “film score” and use a simplistic approach. Selected works will accompany an emotionally engaging visual performance.

Duration
Each submission must be one movement between 5 and 10 minutes in length.

Application Fee
$50 per entry

Composition Eligibility
All works must be original and unpublished. Arrangements are ineligible. Works may have been previously performed but not by an orchestra in Washington State (academic performances do not apply).

Submission Limit
A composer may submit up to three (3) entries for this project but only one prize will be awarded to any one individual.

Award
The winner will receive a performance of his or her work by the Wenatchee Valley Symphony Orchestra, an audio recording and $250.

Deadline
All entries, including the application fee, must be digitally submitted by midnight on November 30, 2015.

Selection
A panel of three judges will evaluate all entries received by the deadline. A work will be judged on its simplistic style and potential to accompany an emotionally engaging visual performance. The winning entries will be announced in January 2016. The rationale of the judges will not be disclosed to the composers. The judges reserve the right to recommend that no award be given. The winners will be required to provide performing rights for this production.

Premiere
Winning compositions will be premiered at Voortex Live, featuring the Wenatchee Valley Symphony Orchestra on April 9 & 10, 2016 in Wenatchee, Washington. Winners are expected to attend one rehearsal and the performances.
