The Secret Opera's Third Annual Composers' Competition

The Secret Opera's Third Annual Composers' Competition
Summary:Opera Opportunity
Deadline: 01 December 2015
Date Posted: 30 September 2015
Details: Announcing the New Voices Series:

The Secret Opera is proud to announce its third annual composers’ competition, the winners of which will have their works performed as part of the company’s New Voices Series, a concert series devoted to programming new works by living composers. Selected musical works will be performed in a series of “mini-concerts” throughout the year, each concert highlighting one to two winning pieces, paired with thematically complementary arias and/or art songs as needed.

The submission deadline is December 1, 2015. All entries will be reviewed and winners notified by January 2016.

Guidelines:

1. We accept works of the following genres: opera, art song, chamber music with voice, oratorio, and multidisciplinary works. All submissions, however, must be vocal pieces; purely instrumental pieces will not be accepted. If you have questions about whether your piece would be appropriate for this competition, please e-mail us at thesecretopera@gmail.com.

2. You may submit more than one piece for consideration, but no more than three.

3. Works should run no longer than 45 minutes in total; if you submit more than one piece, the combined length of all pieces should also not exceed 45 minutes. You may submit an excerpt of a longer work for consideration.

4. You may submit a piece that has already had its premiere, or a piece that has never yet been performed.

5. Unfinished works may be submitted, as long as the submitted segment is ready to be performed. We are also open to workshop performances.

6. While some exceptions may be made in rare circumstances, please limit your submissions to works for ensembles no larger than a typical Pierrot ensemble or augmented Pierrot ensemble.

7. You may submit a piece for consideration even if you have already submitted to one or more of our previous composers’ competitions.

8. Submitted pieces must reflect the mission of The Secret Opera. The company is devoted to performing works with important and relevant social content. Whose story has been left untold? What classic folk tale has a more sinister meaning hidden beneath the surface? What true-life event has a poignant and complex message to be told? These are just examples and are by no means exhaustive. Submissions should simply explore topics that can spark discussion, debate, and that have an immediate place in our society today. See our “Past Performances” page to see the kinds of works we have previously programmed.
