Details: The Church Music Composition organized by the City of Neuss has been in being since 1980. The prize is 5,000 Euros. A jury of experts under the chairmanship of Dr. Thomas Daniel Schlee will decide on the award of the prize. The competition is open to applicants until 30th September 2015.

General

In 2016 the City of Neuss is again offering a prize for church music composition. The competition takes place every four years. The town of Neuss organises it in cooperation with the Protestant and Catholic Church. The prize of 5,000 Euro will not be split.

Requirement profile

The competition takes place in a framework of a composition for a „Time of Peace“ for High Voice and organ (May be augmented by a single percussionist) in the form of a „Messe basse“ or a cantata. Length should not exceed 20 minutes.

If a „Messe basse“ is chosen, the following – in this order - should be set to music: Introit, Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei.

If a cantata is chosen, the order of the movements can be chosen by the composer..

Apart from use of liturgical and biblical texts, themes relating to the field of „Harassment”, „Persecution“, „Flight“, „Terror“ are suggested, using appropriate literature.

The first performance will take place in the framework of the Church Music Week – which stands under the motto „Power -Church-State?“

Compositions should be submitted by 30th September 2015 as follows:

• Eight copies of the score including title and indication of the length of the composition, but without the name of the composer

• eight copies of precise details as to the performance of the work, unless these are evident from the score

• a sealed envelope with the title of the composition on the outside containing the following: name and address of the composer, short biography and a declaration that the work has been neither publicised nor performed (this envelope will only be opened after the jury has made its decision)
