Assistant Professor (Music Theory/Composition Studies)

 Assistant Professor (Music Theory/Composition Studies)
Summary:Teaching Post
Deadline: 15 July 2015
Date Posted: 27 May 2015
Details: The Yong Siew Toh Conservatory, National University of Singapore, seeks applications of interest from composers, musicians, and scholars with abilities to support a music theory curriculum that brings together analysis, composition, and performance to promote creativity, musical awareness, individual artistry and professional competency in its students. Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of music theory as well as pedagogical capabilities to mentor students in creative compositional projects based in common practice genres and contemporary music.

The institution will be seeking to fill multiple positions to support its curricular objectives. It is anticipated that one full-time appointment would begin January 2016 with the aim of having the appointee assist in the final stages of curriculum revision before its implementation in August 2016 as a core component of a major institutional review. This is an open rank search. Rank will be determined by experience. In addition to teaching, the full-time appointee will participate in curriculum development and teaching research, pursue other research interests related to their field of expertise, serve on committees, and contribute to and participate in the life of the conservatory.

Potential part-time appointments are also imagined to support both the theory curriculum outlined above as well as areas of music creation that lie adjacent to but beyond the core focus of the BMus degrees granted by the conservatory. These areas include computer music, jazz/popular music, interdisciplinary art, multimedia, and non-Western classical musical traditions. Part-time appointees would lead courses, sections, and/or workshops to broaden student perspectives on musical creation. Appointees would be expected to have the capacity to connect their specialization in a meaningful way to a curriculum that embraces passionate and musically talented university students from across the entire campus.

The deadline for applications of interest is July 15, 2015. To apply, please send a cover letter and curriculum vitae, names and contacts of 3 references, and the NUS Personal Data Consent for Job Applicants to the Selection Committee at musbox3@nus.edu.sg. The cover letter should detail how your musical, research, and/or professional experiences would support a curriculum that brings together analysis, composition, and performance within numerous genres and eras to promote student creativity, musical awareness, and individual voice.

The Conservatory also seeks to fill an interim position for one year at either Instructor or Lecturer level starting in July 2015. The successful candidate would teach courses addressing form, counterpoint, and orchestration in common practice and contemporary music. The deadline for applications for the interim appointment is April 30, 2015. To apply, please send a cover letter and curriculum vitae, names and contacts of 3 references, and the NUS Personal Data Consent for Job Applicants to the Selection Committee at musbox3@nus.edu.sg.. These documents should clarify how your musical, professional, and/or pedagogical experiences have prepared you to teach the areas of musical form, counterpoint, and orchestration in common practice and contemporary music at an undergraduate level.

Enquiries about the positions can be sent to Assoc. Prof. Peter Edwards at muspie@nus.edu.sg.
