WARMTH Mobile Sauna

 WARMTH Mobile Sauna
Summary:Sound Installation Opportunity
Deadline: 02 October 2014
Date Posted: 18 September 2014
Details: A Sauna is many things to many people. To some it is a haven of luxury wellbeing, to others a late night out in Soho. To some it may be an obscure Finnish tradition, for others a place to catch up with friends after a workout at the gym. In this project, the sauna is mobile, bringing WARMTH as a catalyst for new conversations in unexpected locations.

This project is built around WARMTH, both physically + conceptually, extending an invitation to passers-by, collaborators + audiences, to hang up their coats, leave their phones behind and just experience. Our aim is to create a welcoming space, where all bodies are respected; all genders, sizes, colours, shapes + ages. The sauna is a non-competitive, non-judgemental space; enter, leave, enjoy the WARMTH, sit for a while, take a shower; find your own pace.

Introduction

Expressions of Interest are invited from live artists, performers/dancers, performance artists, writers, sound artists or installation artists to create a piece of work within, or in response to a mobile sauna. For a short period of research + development + public sharing in a festival/performance setting AND/OR a community setting, in early 2015 [fee + expenses paid, subject to ACE funding].

Highly charged, inherently challenging as a social space, the sauna context could provide an ideal opportunity to explore practices around gender, performance/performativity, nakedness, the body, sexuality, LGBT culture, wellbeing, self-esteem, bathing etc. Alternatively, it may be the spatial, sensory or sound elements you wish to explore; woodsmoke, the experience of being within a small space, dimly lit.

The project also addresses the roles of community, cultural ritual + public space; how can this experimental space operate within a public setting? What does the sauna mean as a community venue?

Call-out: ARTISTS

Up to 3 artists will have the opportunity to curate the space, to transform it e.g. through sound/light/installation, to create specific atmospheric or environmental conditions within the space, and/or to use the sauna context as a experimental venue to create new performance/dance/spoken word or participatory work. We are looking for artists who see the audience or public as central to their work, and who have experience working within either a public setting, or an intimate/immersive/site-specific performance context.

A £500 fee, £100 installation/design/costume/production budget + travel and accommodation expenses will be available [subject to funding] for up to 3 artists to develop a short piece of work for the space. This might consist of performing or installing an existing work adapted to the sauna, or trialling an idea for a longer/more developed work/performance.

The sauna will be open to the public in two locations, one festival or performance setting, and one community setting [locations TBC pending venue partners]. Collaborators will all help set up and run the sauna in either/both the festival or community location, and will be given a dedicated period of time to curate the space, to explore and present their own work in response to the context. The detailed project structure will be developed in conversation with selected artists, with potential to shape the project around particular audiences or sites.

We are looking to invite up to 3 artists for this initial stage, and will look to select across disciplines/artforms, from the following groups:
- live artist/performer/performance artist/dancer
- writer/poet/spoken word artist
- sound artist/composer/sound designer
- visual artist/installation/light artist
