Musical Commission to Commemorate WW1 Centenary for Taunton Youth Dance Company
Summary:WW1 Project
Deadline: 06 May 2014
Date Posted: 16 April 2014
Details: Taunton Youth Dance Company and Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre have been awarded funding from Heritage Lottery Fund for a new county-wide initiative called ‘War and Peace: Commemorating the Centenary through Dance’.
This dynamic project will involve young people, schools, community groups, elder groups, professional dancers and music practitioners from across the county and beyond. The focus of the work will look at the real-life experiences of Somerset women and Kathleen Tacchi-Morris (founder of Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre) during the First World War. We are looking for a creative and inspiring musician to create a new musical commission entitled: ‘Letters to the Front Line.’

Description of work

Taunton Youth Dance Company (TYDC) and Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre are looking to commission a new piece of music in collaboration with Somerset Heritage Centre, to be developed as part of a Heritage Lottery Funded project.
Somerset Heritage Centre will provide access to archives, using real life stories from WW1 to develop a piece of music incorporating voice, designed to reflect letters to the front line.

Commission Title: Letters to the Front line Length: 5- 8 mins
Project timescales: Completion July 2014
This Commission will be researched, planned and developed with an aim for completion by July 2014.
The commissioned piece of music will be sent to every school in Somerset as part of an educational resource encouraging schools in using WW1 stimulus in choreography.

Taunton Youth Dance Company Artistic Directors will also create a unique piece of choreography to the music to premiere at the War & Peace Dance Platform on Saturday 15th November 2014.

Approach: The commission will require a ‘whole-project’ ethos, meaning that an active contribution will be required in terms of documenting the creation process. This will be achieved by posting updates on our blog, promoting the initiative through social media, and being interviewed for a film documenting the whole project.

Ownership: The creator of the music will share ownership of the piece with Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre and TYDC with all parties having the rights of further performances, publication, etc.
Where we are based: Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre, Taunton, Somerset, TA2 8PD
