Details: Sixty-Second Songs is a new competition, devised and directed by international soprano Sarah Poole, inviting composers of any age or nationality, to write songs for young people. Each song should ideally last around one minute and there are two categories - Junior or Young Adult. A range of short and inventive poems have been selected for each category.

The best six songs will be selected for performance and publication by Recital Music (subject to contract and agreement) and each composer will also receive a prize of £60.

The judges will also select 6-12 other songs to be performed and published (subject to contract and agreement).

The competition will be judged by:

DAVID HEYES - Double Bass Soloist & Publisher

CATEGORY 1 - JUNIOR (Age 6-12 years)

This category is aimed at young singers with a limited vocal range, from D (a tone above middle C) to E an octave above.

The piano accompaniment should be supportive and accessible for the general pianist rather than the virtuoso.

Each song should last around one minute and ideally be no more than 90 seconds.

CATEGORY 2 - YOUNG ADULT (Age 13-18 years)

This category is aimed at the young adult and the vocal range is from middle C to G (a 12th above). An ossia can be used for any high notes to make the song accessible to singers of different abilities.

The piano accompaniment should be supportive and accessible, and can be more adventurous than category 1.

Each song should last around one minute and ideally be no more than 90 seconds.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

1) Composers may enter by post or email and may submit more than one entry but each must be accompanied by the relevant fee.

2) By Post: £5.00 per entry - please send one copy of the song which includes the title and your name. Cheques should be payable to Recital Music. Please send a recording if available.

3) By Email: £6.50 per entry
Please write the title and your name on the entry. Please also include your contact details with the entry. Please send a recording if available.

4) Payment can be made by cheque, bank draft or Paypal. Please contact Recital Music for details if you wish to pay by bank draft or Paypal.

5) Please also include a programme note and composer biography.

6) Please write an email address clearly on the music if you would like confirmation that the entry has arrived.

7) Music will not be returned and please do not send original manuscripts.

8) The judges decision is final and correspondence will not be entered into after the winners have been announced.

DEADLINE: 5.00pm on 30 April 2014

The winners will be announced on Recital Music's website on 30 May 2014. The winners will be contacted before this date.

The judges reserve the right to reallocate the prize money as they decide.

The competition rules on this website are the only official rules and Recital Music accepts no responsibility if the competition is advertised incorrectly elsewhere.
